Founding

The Zukunftsbackstube is a hybrid of an architectural practice, makerspace and future workshop, made for the modern creative industry. It was founded in 2020 by Benjamin Rieß and presents a methodology for developing ideas, creating models and initiating projects.

Methodology

The Zukunftsbacktube utilises strategic combinations of analogue tools and digital applications in various formats, as well as the new possibilities offered by the makerspace and artificial intelligence, as a method for generating ideas and creating handmade and computer-aided models.

New creative culture

Approach

The manner of ‘Making’ and ‘Baking’ forms the approach of a new crative culture. In this new culture of creation, making is a hands-on creativity and baking is a generative and simulative form of production and fabrication.
The conception of the Zukunftsbackstube is a mind map blending art and science, past and future.

Mind map

Digression

During the Italian Renaissance, Mannerists created new dynamic and complex forms by treating marble like pasta. They called this technique ‘marmo molle‘, the soft marble. Manierist sculpture in architectural dimensions refers to the ‘grand manner’ and gave rise to the Baroque.
The ‘marmo molle’ of yesteryear is now called ‘ProtoPasta’. It is amorphous, consists of a heat-treatable, environmentally friendly material and is printed through the nozzle by a bot at a temperature of over 428° Fahrenheit. Thanks to this new technology, conventional reference systems can be eliminated to create innovative prototypes.
With a fresh manner and defining ideas for form, space and structure, the Zukunftsbackstube designs a microcosm on a gand manner and pionieers a new magnificent modernism.

Paradigm

In science, the formation of stars in the universe resembles a cosmic ‘baking process‘ in which huge gas clouds are compressed under the influence of gravity. This process is called ‘molecular gastronomy‘. It takes millions of years and takes place in the ‘star kitchens‘ of the universe.
In the context of simulations carried out on quantum computers to model the origin of the universe or to generate other physical models, the term ‘baking’ is often used colloquially. Such computational centres are also referred to as incubators or bakeries.
In the Zukunftsbackstube, ‘baking’ refers to a new form of creative culture rooted in the theory of creation. It is used for generative and simulation-based development of space, form and structure in architectural design of tomorrow.

Zeitgeist

Our modern age, in which everything seems feasible and developable, is a jack-of-all-trades.
In oder to do justice to its time, the Zukunftsbackstube is designed as an egg-laying wool-milk sow of art and architecture. It wants to drive its time ahead like a colourful dairy cow in order to showcase it.
In this way, the Zukunftsbackstube formulates a critique of its modern time of hyper objects and as an all-rounder. By abolishing time, it wants to create the conditions for overcoming time in order to shape the future.

Focus

With a strict focus on the interplay of spatial architecture and design language, combined with the right blend of a hands-on culture and artistic ideas, the Zukunftsbackstube creates a methodological microcosm and develops urban prototypes that, through intelligent climate concepts — ranging from classically inspired designs based on baking tins or waffle irons to experimental approaches using dextrose or multivitamins — address the specific challenges of our era of global warming.

Since 2020

Culture

The Zukunftsbackstube is a workshop cult dedicated to hands-on creativity and a new creative culture, made for the modern creative industries in art and architecture.

Fields

Spatial Architectures, Spatial Installations, Micro-Urbanism, Fine Arts and Art in public spaces, well tempered Environments and intelligent climate Concepts, Sustainability and Circular Economy, resource-efficient and climate-friendly Constructions, participatory Project development, Design Research etc.

Services

The Zukunftsbackstube specialises in architectural design, placing a strong emphasis on spatial quality and the judicious use of appropriate materials.
Using a distinctive working method, it develops specific spatial models tailored to the client’s requirements and uses these as a basis for further planning and project services.
It provides architectural and planning services from the initial concept through to the design stage, and collaborates with experienced partners on the construction phase.

Network

We value open dialogue, cross-network collaboration and interdisciplinary perspectives. Furthermore, we welcome experimental network development in the form of Banana Studios for a network that follows the curvature of the Earth.
